नानी की कहानी पुस्तक का कुछ अंश : सच्चाई और कहानी के बीच की सीमा रेखा बहुत धुँधली होती है और इस कथानक में आत्मकथा और कथा के बीच की यह रेखा एकदम लुप्त हो गयी है। पाठक सवाल पूछ सकते हैं कि इसमें कितना इतिहास है और कितनी कथा। इसका उत्तर मैं खुद नहीं जानता। हर रोज़ जैसे मेरी नानी आगे की कथा बतातीं वैसे ही यह पुस्तक आगे बढ़ती रही। कथा थी कि कैसे नानी की माँ ने अपने पति को खोजने की कोशिश की, यानी कि रोज़ाना के विवरण से मैंने इसकी शुरुआत की कि किस तरह उसकी माँ के बाल-पति एक दिन सिर्फ़ यह कहकर चले गये, “मैं जा रहा हूँ” पर कहाँ, यह नहीं बताया, न कोई पता ही छोडा। लेकिन………
